That sounds like a great trip! We haven’t done Pulau Weh yet, but maybe next time we’re in Sumatra. I’m sure you’d enjoy Belitung too if it’s not already on your list. Good luck!

I’ll start out in the North…. Going through your Sulawesi stuff as well…. Thanks for doing this - helping other travellers🙏]]> Great stuff you wrote here. I’m right doing a 3 month tour in Southeast Asia – and semi-planning my next 6 month trip in november 2024….. So already had a look on googlemaps earlier concerning these islands -since I’ll do the entire Sumatra (in lenght)….;-) But you made it easy to decide – so I’m going for 3+ weeks on several islands in December and January👍👍

Hi! That’s exactly when we were there. We went in late December and stayed until early January. It was a very different way to ring in the New Year. Very relaxing though. I don’t think there’s a whole lot of difference between dry and rainy seasons here. At least in our experience, the rain was usually at night. During the day it was sometimes cloudy, but plenty of sun overall. Good luck!

Very interesting reading, just one question: we are planning to go by end december-beginnig january. The pictures you posted were taken in december? Did I understood right you where there in December right?
Just wondering if there would be much difference in therms of clear skies.. etc between december or a “drier” month. Thank you!

Hi. Generally there’s no alcohol available, except maybe if you stay at one of the surf resorts.

That’s a fair point. Even though crocs haven’t been spotted outside of Matahari island or Tuangku island (Haloban village), it’s still possible for them to show up in other places. Definitely avoid mangroves and swamps since they like to hang out in those areas, and that’s where the last attack happened in Pulau Matahari.

Please be aware anytime you go to the beach. Crocs are known to be extremely patient hunters. They can wait for weeks and learn behaviors of boat paths and „schedules“ and then just wait. Always try to have one onlooker on the beach while snorkeling.
