Q: Is this all true?

A: As I hinted at in Before We Begin, “depending on the quantum state of the atoms and sub-atomic particles that make up that which you think of as you, the events depicted on this site may or may not be a part of your reality.” One of the foundations of the multiverse theory of our existence is that any possible outcome exists somewhere, and that reality is constantly branching off into a different collections of multiverses everytime more than one possible outcome of an action exists. The idea that there is only one reality that we all are part of quickly fades when you start looking at the work today’s brightest physicists are doing. It’s clear there’s a lot of stuff going on that our brains aren’t capable of completely comprehending right now. So to ask if it’s all “true” is a loaded question. Am I really experiencing everything I’m writing about? You bet.

Q: Why are you writing all this? Why put it on the internet?

A: This is a work in progress, that I didn’t intend to be made public until it was complete, if at all. A mistake in checking a radio button on my blog’s admin control panel changed all that, and here we are. I know that sounds strange that a blog would be intended to be kept private, but as a confirmed blogger, it’s easier for me to think and communicate in that format.

After tens of thousands of pageviews and dozens of emails in the past few months, I’ve decided to keep writing this story in public. It’s often harder, but sometimes doing it this way makes the whole thing easier, too. On the whole, I’m feeling much better about this situation, so I don’t see the need to change anything. Also surprisingly, the cranks and trolls have been few.

Q: How do you do it? How do you time travel?

A: The answer to that question depends on which type of travel we’re talking about. I’ve experienced two different types of travel, as discussed here. I spent time between the years of 1976 and 1990 that I can only describe as “consciousness only” travel, where after my automobile accident I woke up in a strange clearing that appeared to be Hawaii and then later in my old bedroom in 1976. I was in the body that I’d had back then.

I’ve also made a number of trips bodily, where I leave the temporal region I’m sequentially living through and find myself sometime else, but in the same physical form. If I stub my toe in that other time when traveling “bodily,” it still hurts when I return.

When I travel in consciousness only, it seems to be brought on by trauma. My accident in 2005 seemed to be the catalyst for my extended trip back to 1976. My bodily trips are of much shorter duration, are usually much closer temporally, and seem to be brought on by a desire to go to a certain situation. That travel seems to be more intention-directed. Interestingly, my very first bodily TT event happened after a long day of MRIs. My automobile accident resulted in injuries in a number of different areas, and concurrent treatment means I’ve had to spend quite a bit of time in MRI tubes. Maybe that’s had something to do with it. To date, the longest bodily trip I’ve taken has spanned 7 months. Soon though, I expect to travel a long way, all the way back to 1933. At least that’s what the letter from my Grandfather says happens. Whether I have any trips closer to that span between now and when that trip takes place, I can only guess. I don’t have any evidence that will happen, though.

Q: What caused your traveling to start?

A: I really believe that being presented with the letter from my Grandfather opened some part of my consciousness to this phenomenon. The next day I had a traumatic auto accident that sent my consciousness back to 1976. I think the events of the previous day made that trip possible.

Q: Can I do it?

A: Beats the hell out of me. I’m not even sure how I do it. I can only guess as to whether I’m just a freak, or if everyone has these abilities. There are so many time travel stories around, from Somewhere In Time in the 80s to The Time Traveler’s Wife, published just a couple years ago, that a lot of human brain power is considering this thing. Is that because of imagination? Or are a lot of people simply trying to make sense of it all?

Q: Have you ever met another time traveler, like Dan Vasser does in the cancelled CBS television show Journeyman?

A: Well, yes, I think so. As you can read in Living in the Past, our housekeeper in the 70s, Thelma, claimed to have traveled back to her past, much like I was doing when I talked with her about it. The interesting thing about Thelma, was that I must have instinctively knew there was something unusual about her, because I so quickly trusted her about what I was going through. She told me about an experience she had that lasted a long time, and was very similar to my trip to 1976. When I was a kid and knew Thelma, I had no feeling that she was different in any way. But then, that Thelma was apparently a different person than the one I knew. On the quantum level, at any rate.

Q: What about John Titor?

A: John Titor is an interesting story, but believing it means you have to believe that time travel can be accomplished technologically. I don’t see why that should be any less likely than what I’ve gone through, but it does add another technique to the mix to consider. Then again, I apparently travel in two very different ways, so that there may be a third way to traverse time shouldn’t be any less likely than the idea there are two ways to do so.

If you’re not aware of the John Titor story, a person popped up on a number of bulletin boards and newsgroups in 2000 and 2001, claiming to be a soldier from 2036, sent to our time to recover some obsolete IBM computer system they need in the future. Saying he didn’t worry about being public while here because no one would believe him, he answered questions about the future, including giving details about a civil war in the U.S. in 2005. Some people are convinced he was telling the truth, others believe he was a well-conceived hoax. The person claiming to be “John Titor” ceased posting under than name in March of 2001. Here is the John Titor page at Wikipedia.org.

Q: How will we (the readers of this blog) know if you travel back to 1933 and don’t come back?

A: I’ve made arrangements to post the details as best they can be determined, should that happen. Because of the evidence I’ve collected, I fully intend for this to happen, but for all I know, I may return to this time quickly, if not instantaneously. From your perspective, I may not be gone at all. If it happens though, you’ll know.

Q: Do you play the lottery? When you travel to the future, do you bring back winning numbers.

A: I haven’t yet, nor do I really intend to do that. As strange as it sounds, winning a big lottery jackpot that way could be more trouble than it’s worth. Much more.

Q: Are you rich?

A: Yes. But my Mother prefers “Richard.” :-) Seriously though, I’m rich in friends and loved ones. Not so much so in terms of money.

Q: If you decided to go back in time and change history, what would you change?

A: There’s a very funny short story about just that subject here, called Wikihistory. I’ve thought about that question a lot, and though I did things differently during my second time through 1976 and after, when I bodily travel, I prefer to, in the words of Captain Jean Luc Picard in Star Trek: First Contact, “stay out of the way of history.” I plan to practice that principle when I travel to 1933. I’ve done quite a bit of investigation, looking for myself in the past, and have come up empty. I take that to mean that either I’m not in the past that long, or that I’m successful in following Captain Picard’s instructions to his crew. :-)

Q: How does your family really feel about your traveling?

A: To protect their privacy as much as I can, I’ve dealt with them in broad strokes. They’re supportive, but I won’t lie to you, it’s tough.

Q: Have you tried to avoid traveling to 1933.

A: If I knew how it worked, I might be able to, but since I really don’t…

Q: Again, is this all true?

A: Come on, what do you think?
